If you ever suffer from bad breath, you will be here looking for what causes bad breath. To find out whether you are really suffering from bad breath, try scraping your tongue and smell what it is like. If you smell something terribly disgusting, then there is a high chance that you are indeed suffering from halitosis or chronic bad breath. Many causes of bad breath have been known, but one condition that usually causes bad breath is “geographic tongue”.

It is essential that you do not complicate what a geographic tongue is. In actual fact, a geographic tongue is just a tongue that contains lots of grooves and fissures. Those who suffered from geographic tongue do not have a smooth tongue and this allows anaerobic bacteria to reside and grow in it. Anaerobic bacteria is what known by many people as the major causes of halitosis. In fact, this condition is one of the biggest causes of bad breath which affects all kinds of people. In addition, those who suffered from geographic tongue are usually prone to having white tongue too.

If you ever had a chance to look into the mirror, try to observe your tongue. If you detect a white coating on your tongue, especially in the middle portion, then most probably you should try to scrape and smell it as this may be the major causes of your bad breath condition.

These are the steps in how to properly scrape and clean your tongue. Before the steps are explained, remember that scraping your tongue does not mean literally scrubbing it as hard as you can. This will only make your tongue bleed, and this is never good. Also, this doesn’t mean that you have to stop brushing or flossing your teeth, as tongue scraping alone will not really help prevent halitosis from coming back. Finally, never spend too much on a tongue cleaner as you only need something that is firm and sturdy to do the job.

How to scrape a white coated tongue:

* Take it slowly by sweeping from the back of your tongue to the front using your tongue cleaner. Then do this from the left to the right.

* Now, try to put some of your oxygenating toothpaste onto your tongue cleaner’s head.

* Once you have done that, use your tongue cleaner’s head to apply the gel on your whole tongue. Try to apply the gel even further into the back of your tongue without gagging. By doing so, it will help you to stop bad breath by preventing anaerobic bacteria from forming at the back of your mouth.

* Keep the toothpaste coating your mouth for 90 more seconds - but if you start gagging, feel free to spit it out. This is to make sure that the causes of bad breath in your mouth are completely eliminated.

* Brush your teeth as normal.

By making effort to find out the causes of bad breath, such as the white tongue, you will be able to help yourself to diagnose your bad breath condition properly. In this way, you can get the right bad breath treatment to help you achieve a fresher and cleaner breath.
