Do you want clean, clear, odorless drinking water in your home? Water filters are available that you can install under your sink. It is not hard to do and you will have clean, fresh water free of the impurities it gathers on the way to your home.

Different filter cartridges are available to filter different levels and types of contaminants in your water. You should choose the cartridge that is right for your area. The hardest part of the job is taking the time to read all the instructions first so this choice is correctly made.

Find a place under your sink where you will be able to easily reach the unit. Filter cartridges need to be replaced regularly so you want this to be easy. But, take care that the placement doesn’t block access to the plumbing. There will be times when you want easy access to the pipes as well. Put the apparatus where you want it to go and mark where the screws will be with a pencil.

You won’t need a complete tool kit to undertake this task but you will need an adjustable wrench or one that is the right size to undo and tighten your plumbing fittings. You’ll also need a drill to make screw holes and a screwdriver to insert and tighten the screws that hold the mounts for the filtration unit.

Drill the holes in the wall where you have marked it using the correct size drill bit for the screws. Different models of filtration systems will have different numbers of screws to attach them but they will all provide the screws needed. Hold the unit in place and attach the screws to the wall. Check that it is mounted solidly.

The filter works on the cold water flow and this will need to be turned off. Some homes have a shut off valve under the sink. If you don’t have one of these you will need to turn the water off at the meter where it flows into your property. Once the water is turned off allow excess water in the pipes to drain by turning on the faucet.

Water flows into your kitchen through a flexible hose. This needs to be disconnected and attached to the filtration system so the flow of water is into the unit first. Put some paper towels or a hand towel beneath the hose before you disconnect it. This will catch any residual water left in the line. Once you have attached the hose to the unit. Attach the hose that comes with the unit to the pipe.

Check the lines to make sure that you have connected them properly. You should be able to trace the line of hose from its entry to the cupboard through the unit and then on to the pipe that connects to your faucet. Turn the water flow back on and check for leaks. If there are none turn the faucet on and allow the water to run. There may be some discoloration from sediment at first but this will clear quickly.

It is easy to install water filters that will provide clean, odorless drinking water at home. But, don’t forget to change the filter cartridges at recommended intervals or all your good work will be undone.
