Environmental concerns have increased sharply over the years. As the name implies, off-road vehicles are more fun when ridden off the road. In order to keep land areas open for use, good relationships between public land managers, private land owners, and ATV riders must be maintained.

In order to keep land areas open, good relations are needed between public land managers, private land owners and those using the land. Consideration and common courtesy is usually all that is required. Following some simple habits will help keep off-road riding fun while also keeping it clean for others too.

First off, learn about the area you plan to ride in. Contact the public land manager or private owner to see if there are any restrictions in the area and to get permission to ride there. Get a map if possible and stay on the trails if there are any.

Keep your vehicle as quiet as possible. ATVs can be relatively quiet while still delivering the needed power. Noisy ATVs are an annoyance to animals and people alike; noise also causes more fatigue for the driver.

Follow any trail markers or closure signs. Reasons for closures may not seem apparent to you, but follow them anyway. Areas may be closed due to environmental concerns for plants or wildlife, fire danger, or safety for the riders.

Leave all gates and fences the way you found them. This is very important in livestock areas. Always leave the area as clean or cleaner than you found it; carry a bag to put trash in.

Be considerate of others using the trails. Give the right of way to hikers and horseback riders. Pull off the trail and turn off your engine should you come across someone on horseback. Give the wildlife or livestock plenty of time to get off the trail and out of your way; approach cautiously.

As part of your concern for the environment, you also need to keep your ATV shocks in top working order. Having a good set of ATV shocks installed will help you have a smoother more comfortable ride. The proper ATV shocks will also help you maintain better control over your vehicle when traveling over rough terrain.
